Thank you for the heads-up on the free short story - I downloaded it for my lunch-time reading :)
Totally understand how you feel about the book - it was the same for me with Nalini Singh's "Archangel's Shadow." I just could not get into it. Very annoying when that happens with a book you've been looking forward to reading :(
I will be getting "Devil Said Bang" from my friend's library in the next week or two, and will try to remember and post my opinion once I read it.
I read it. Definitely the weakest book in the series :( It was a quick read, but it left me uninvolved. I'll read the next one (if there is one), but I certainly won't be eagerly counting down the days before it comes out.
Oh, and I was not bothered by the historical inaccuracy, since I know nothing about Wild Bill Hickok, but I can totally see how it would bug you (because I have exactly the same reaction when I run across thing that I know are inaccurate).
I would've forgiven the inaccuracy if one of the characters, namely Wild Bill, said something like, "People THINK that's what happened, but really, it was all a scam," so that the readers know that the author knows what the score is, but that the author is intentionally twisting it.
Of course, one might assume that we should always know what the author is doing, but....
Thanks for the link. Glad I left this one a DNF, though. I think the next book in the series is the last, so I'll keep my ears open for reviews on it....

The historical inaccuracy I mentioned really bugs the crap out of me, though....

If you don't mind being spoiled, this short-and-to-the-point Amazon review summarizes things pretty well: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2S5CTV6DUPX3Z/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm
