I bought this in Kindle edition specifically to read for this challenge, first time I bought a book for that purpose. And I tell you, for at least the first quarter of the book I seriously thought I had wasted all that money
( ... )
I agree with you, this book is seriously difficult to get into, so much data to input and process like a jigsaw puzzle (have I got an edge, is this a cloud or a tree?) and I even put it aside a couple of time because it was just too much at once.
What a great description! That's it!
There is a comment later in the book about a woman who had something like 10 kids at once, maybe they trade body parts like uterus so that the magicians in the breeding farms can to IVF and make them have twins or triplets etc all at once? External uterus farming (uterine replicators?) We never see inside a breeding farm so its not clear.
The trouble I had is there's the implication that once a woman has kids, that's it. She can't have another birth with her womb, which means either these guys aren't as smart as we think they should be and don't know women can give birth multiple times, or due to the radiation beaming down on the planet, you basically have one shot to have a kid, so you better make that shot count?
I'm still working my way through this one (about halfway through) and should have it done by the end of the month. I haven't read your spoiler filled review yet, but so far I do agree with the non-spoiler part. It's not the easiest book to read. They throw a lot at you in this book, and not everything sticks. So far, I do like it, but not so much as some of my goodreads friends.
It's utterly tough. I'm glad I started the month with this, because if I'd waited until the last minute, I'm not sure I would've gotten this review up in time.
I've tried and failed to read this book three times!
The setting is very interesting to me--highly advanced bioengineering "indistinguishable from magic"? Yes please. :)
However, I find it difficult to stay interested in the comings and goings of the main characters, which made it difficult to keep going with the book as it was fairly character driven.
Oh well. One of these days I know I'll get to the end.

It's no easy read, but wow! Good luck with this... definitely pick a time when you've got plenty of patience and few distractions! :)
