I don't think a drug addict protagonist would bother me much unless the drug addiction was used too much as a gimmick or was just added to give the female protagonist a major flaw for the sake of having a major flaw. Don't know if I'm describing this well, but usually when I read a book I can tell whether this falls into one of these categories.

Whether or not it's a gimmick seems to depend on the reader and the reviews you read. I say, if you're interested in the book, discover how it works for yourself. There's definitely things here to recommend! :)

For 99 cents, I'd be having no regrets. Hell, this was a Christmas gift for me, and I don't regret reading it. I may have been in a grumpy mood while reading, but it's certainly worth checking out!

It was a fast read for me. I could tell Kane had fun writing this book and it was sort of contagious for me. It took me awhile to get used to the names and the language though.

Hmm...I had no idea about that original cover. Yeah, totally like the new one.

Have you read any of the rest of the series yet? If so, do you like them better than the first?

I skimmed the second book at the bookstore, but I didn't love it enough to buy the entire series since there are several books already out. Honestly, I'm kinda wiped out with the whole UF series thing. I'm beginning to like reading one book and getting everything in one go. Haha.

It's a genre that's easy to get burnt out on, that's for sure. To date, there's only three books in the series so far, and I know at least one more is on the way. :)

I've debated getting this book for months but something about the blurb rubs me wrong. It just plain might be too dark for my tastes. I admit, the idea of a heroine who is a drug-addict is a big part of that, though I know it COULD be handled well.

What are some of the urban fantasies you've read that you consider dark? Just curious, because I may be able to compare. :)

For me, "Unholy Ghosts" was a "Very Good, bordering on Great" when I read it last summer. A good friend of mine, however, could not get into it (and I have since gotten her hooked up on the October Daye series, so we do have similar tastes in books), so I understand where you are coming from.

I have skimmed the book again a few weeks ago, and now I wonder how much of your opinion was influenced by the fact that you have read Ilona Andrews' and Seanan McGuire's series first. If I was reading "Unholy Ghosts" for the first time today, my rating probably would have been "between Good and Very Good".

Hope you'll give "Unholy Magic" a try!

I've got Unholy Magic in my TBR pile, so we'll see how that goes!
