I am with you on the covers - really liked the first two, and the third one is just "meh."
I am waiting to order my copy from Amazon - need to come up with a couple more books to get the free shipping, and with my husband once again joining the ranks of the unemployed I have to be really careful with the books I chose to buy on what remains of my Amazon gift card... Thanks god for libraries ;)
Yup, I have the other two. Thankful for lack of hanging out butts and tramp stamps on the cover for the third book, but in my opinion it just does not stand out - it could be for just about any paranormal book. The previous ones were more unique.
Currently 2 cents short of $25 on my Amazon order. Am both amused and annoyed.
I tried to come up with something between "Like, Not Love" and "Must Have," but failed miserably. I miss your old system myself. Probably because I have to seriously want the book in order to buy it, so I could relate to the buy it, borrow it, or give it away scenarios. But that's just me.
(and yeah, it is good to see a UF book without some chick's butt prominently displayed or a plethora of tattoos everywhere)
I really love these books...count_fenringMarch 5 2011, 06:45:59 UTC
They're one of the two sources of "steeped in Boston" fiction that I've liked so far, and they make me way less afraid of my neighborhood than Dennis Lehane. The playground where the serial killer confrontation happens in Darkness, Take My Hand is seriously a block away.
Evie has an unlicensed handgun in the first book; I'm not remembering whether Rena knows, but I remember the gun being there.

Oh, pretty much every single novel written by Dennis Lehane. My favorites are Shutter Island, Darkness, Take My Hand, and a two-way tie between The Given Day and Gone, Baby, Gone.
He's really excellent at writing realistic people, and at giving the feel of Boston as a location. He also tends to write crime novels where horrifying things happen, and they tend to be set right where he grew up - which is the neighborhood I live in now. For example, a big serial-killer confrontation happens in the playground across the way from my apartment, and one of the shootouts happens at the corner market I get most of my food from.

I haven't read his work, though I did see Mystic River in theatres when it came out!
