I'm glad you liked "Passing Through." I saw it as a purely character story -- I went through the rural Ohio census records when I was doing graduate research in history and I can assert pretty confidently that some women like Roberta exist, which fascinates me. So I've been surprised by reviewers who read (and dismissed it) as an overt political story. Your comment about it being written by a woman is doubly pleasing. Thanks!

The way I look at it, politics always have a very human element to them, but I didn't see this as a political story at all. Just a story about a woman who struggled to deal with who and what she was, only to realize if she'd been born years later, she wouldn't have had to make quite the same sacrifices.
