*laughs* I stayed away from that book after trying Ilona Andrews' first book in her On the Edge series, which I soon quickly realized that the plot was a vehicle to get the characters together.
Personally, for me, when the romance (bad romance to me given that IA's fetish seems to be her version of 'strong, alpha males') overwhelms the kickass portion, it's time to drop the book unless I went into the book looking for romance, in which case it is the plot.
Andrews does gravitated to those asshole-ish Alpha males... I haven't read the first book of the Edge, but I'm gonna sample it on the Kindle one of these days. To date, though, I hear the best books are the Kate Daniels ones, and even there, you really need to read the first TWO books to give a fair verdict. The second book improves RIDICULOUSLY upon the first.
I did!!! I squeed with joy when I saw that! :) I was a little flabbergasted to see that seeing my review (she sees MY reviews?!?!?!) kind of made her want to re-read the book, which is really cool. :)
Samhain and Carina usually have pretty decent covers. Changeling Press has the worst. Ellora's Cave is somewhat in between.
I gave up on the Kate series after two books, and am not even bothering to try the Edge series. "Alpha males" tend to be douchebags, at least in my effed-up opinion ;-)
Fair enough on the Kate Daniels books. I was just telling someone else that to give a fair verdict, you have to read the first two. If the second book still doesn't work for ya, it's time to move on! :)
There's an option on the Kindle, which is turned on by default, which shows you the most popular highlights in a given book. You can turn it off in the settings, and should. It's on the second page of settings at the bottom on my Kindle. I have no idea why it would be the default setting. I find it incredibly annoying.
I've never read Ilona Andrews, but this review makes me want to stay away...but you say her other series is worthwhile, so perhaps I just avoid this particular piece! I don't mind a little romance mixed in with my speculative fiction, but I agree with you, if it's the whole focus of the plot, meh. Not my style.
I really enjoyed Dust. Looking forward to seeing what you thought of it.
The problem with Silent Blade is that it's pretty much a novella that's nothing but romance. It's actually shorter than a novella, but it feels longer than a short. Novelette, perhaps?
Try the Kate Daniels series, but warning: the first book is very obviously a debut, so to give a fair verdict, read the second too, because there's a MASSIVE improvement in the craft between books one and two. Then, if you're still not into it, it's safe to say later books probably won't change your mind. :)
