Comic Review 2010

Dec 30, 2010 17:51

Since I made my 2010 resolution to read a single comic book a day, I've ended up reading QUITE a bit of stuff. Some of it, you've already seen, as I reviewed it during the year (don't worry, links will be made available here too), but the rest, you can find here. We're still without a comic shop, but my husband has quite the collection, so other ( Read more... )

I read very few new comics this year. I'd previously read the entire Sandman series (LOVE LOVE LOVE them) and this year I managed to read a few of the spinoffs (Death: The High Cost of Living, Death: The Time of your Life, and The Sandman Presents: The Furies). Would like to read more of them, especially now after seeing what you thought of them. I'm particularly intrigued by the ones featuring Lucifer.

Other than those 3, I didn't read any new graphic novels this year. Huh. Will have to remedy that in 2011 :) ('cause, you know, motherhood will leave me ALL SORTS of time to read....)

I really, really liked the Lucifer focused tale in the Sandman Presents series. Honestly, I wish they'd collect all those Sandman Presents tales into a really nice hardcover. :)

I won't be talking about ongoing series unless it's just something I can't shut up about. But as I complete a series, I'll be reviewing it (first up: The Dreaming).

It'll give me a chance to really talk about the series instead of summarizing like I do here, you know?

But if I read an individual issue of ANYTHING that's just a complete stand-out, I might do a spotlight. The idea occurred to me after a really compelling issue of The Dreaming.

Ooooh, I want the chibi Endless :-)

I can't remember if I got the "Absolute Sandman" books in 2009 or 2010. That is probably not a good sign :) I read "Watchmen" somewhere around then, too. Loved all of them.

The only comics I am SURE I read this year were the "Firefly" spin-offs ("Better Days," "Those Left Behind," and "The Shepherd's Tale"). They were OK, and now I am bitter again that Fox canceled "Firefly" after only 13 episodes.

I've seen those spin-offs in the stores and hesitated. I'm not a huge Firefly fan, and the one I read, "Those Left Behind," I was just okay with. I guess the other titles are about the same quality?

Yeah, they were just average. I am glad they finally showed us the background on Shepherd Book, but the comics themselves weren't anything to write home about with high praises.

The Sandman DREAM COUNTRY ( my favorite selection in there is obvious, it's A Dream Of A Thousand Cats....also read Witchblade compilation series ( several of the comics in one bookbound edition), a very grim version of Grimm's Fairy Tales ( you'll never see Snow White or Jack and the Beanstalk in the same way again LOL) and a DC comics compilation of House of Mystery comics ( the horror comics never fail to amaze me as a fan of those old series from DC), glanced through my big FROM HELL comic ( one of my all-time favorites) and flipped through some Clive Barker stuff, Hellraiser comics, and Gore Shriek ( another old very graphic horror series).

I don't know if it's an update or what, but there's a "House of Mystery" series that came out back in 2007/2008 that's related to Gaiman's creations from Sandman, but we had to stop getting it when the comic shop closed. It doesn't sound like this is the same title you're referring to... what was it about?

I want to read FROM HELL one day, just don't know when. :)

It was a compilation of a lot of old comics from the past so it had nothing to do with Neil Gaiman. It was all different horror stories from their comic from a long time ago. It was black and white though not colored art.
