I have almost all of his books and love them. The Mystery of Grace is wonderful in its own way. Hope he continues writing about that world too.

There are certainly things I liked about the book. I worry I was picking on it a bit too much in this review, but that's the danger of being a BIG NAME AUTHOR. Silly reviewers like me tend to hold them to higher expectations. :)

Interesting review!! anonymous December 3 2010, 17:59:14 UTC
Really interesting to read what you wrote about this book. I read it a while ago, and didn't remember that much about the story. I did remember liking the book overall, although I agree that this isn't the best place to begin if you've never read Charles deLint. I suppose for anyone who'd like to start, check a library -- that way, if you're not keen on the book, you can just return it and try again. :)

Thanks for commenting, Jo! And good suggestion about using the library. de Lint's got SO much available, you're bound to find something you like. :)

I've never read Charles de Lint, but I may in the future. I haven't felt much like reading lately, and I don't know why.

I am so glad you mentioned the Halloween costume thing--I feel the same way. It isn't just that I'm overweight (which I am) and would bust out of something like that even if I felt inclined to dress like a slut, I kind of feel like the expectation of women wearing that kind of costume is (I'm going to sound like a rabid feminist crazy person) kind of insulting. I mean, I'm insulted by it. I also think that there are ways to appear sexy without being trashy--sometimes covering up and leaving something to the imagination is way more engaging.

I have those phases too... I'm reading something, but it's out of habit more than enjoyment, and I'll go days without picking the book up, no matter how much I like the writing or world-building.

Halloween is infinitely frustrating. At least I'm not going to costume parties or anything, but I've never been good with making my own costume, but then the store-bought stuff is just frustrating to no end!

A couple years ago, I went as a vampire (big surprise--I realized I'd never gone as a vampire before, and decided it was high-time I did), and instead of buying a costume, I put together a black skirt and corsette-blouse I already owned with my favorite black boots, and bought a few accessories to finish the costume (fishnet tights, long black gloves, that kind of thing). With the generous application of black eyeliner and blood-red lipstick, it turned out really well, and it was much more "me" than any store-bought costume could have been.

Sounds fabulous! Did you buy fake fangs?

I've only read some of Charles de Lint's short stories in anthologies (some of his full length books are on my to-read list), but I love John Jude Palencar's art. A friend got me his art book. I love his covers for C.S. Friedman's The Magister Trilogy. http://i.imgur.com/RFgLI.jpg

Oh, I've seen those. They do grab my eye!

I didn't know Palencar had an art book out!

I'm on a person mission to read the Newford series, using his guide in his FAQ on the website, and then filling in the blanks what he labels as non-essential. :)
