As a sidenote, I generally care shit all about covers but had an identical response here: The coloring and text is fantastic—that smoke writing is just hypnotizing. The model left me cold—he just seemed stiff, to centered but with the awkward gun position and not a very powerful angle and otherwise just ... didn't capture me.

Thanks for your response and the link to your review. In truth, I feel a little guilty for putting this one down, and I think if it doesn't find a home, I might try it again one day. Maybe. That said, if it DOES find a home, that's not going to break my heart. I just wish I'd been into it more.

If you do give another go I hope it grows on you—if not, it's hardly the end of the world. I'm of the firm opinion that one need not like everything no matter how well regarded it may be. Personal taste counts for a lot, and that doesn't need to be a guilty thing.

Well, I can't say I'm not sad you didn't connect with it, because I've really enjoyed reading your other reviews. But yeah, diff'rent strokes. Thank a lot, though.;)

Well, I'm almost done the second one.:) (And it has a few more female characters, incidentally, so the pronoun problems are hopefully not quite as pronounced. Now I just have to worry about juggling large groups of people...)

Hm. This is the first I'd heard of this book. Like the top half of the cover, not so into the bottom half. Anyway, looking at this review, I think this book could be too complex for me. Seems like a lot is going on.

I have the feeling I'd be impatient too, plus literary fantasy isn't my favorite. The cowboys/magic/Mayan aspects - I'm not sure I'd like the mix. I don't know. Maybe I'd have to be in the right mood for this one.

You may want to try something that just mixes two of the three. Have you read NATIVE STAR yet?

I did write it down to at one point to read on my own but didn't put it on my onnline bookshelf.

Sometimes, I don't think about these things hard enough. I'm not much of a reviewer. lol I can get in-depth but sometimes I think not enough.

Basically, sometimes, my reviews are the equivalent of a song review, It had a really good beat and you can dance to it. LOL

It depends on the book and what I read I guess. Also, about how passionate or not I was about the book.

I'd never heard of this book, but interestingly you're review has made me want to really read it. I think it's a sign of an excellent review, that even though the book wasn't to your taste it's still clear it might work for others.

I, too, I really liked Rook's powers. That was quite a great twist.
