I've been wavering about this one for a long time because it's not Gaiman and I wasn't sure if I'd like what someone else did with the series... you've sold me :)

Oh good! Let me know what you think!

I really like what I've read of Mike Carey's work. If you ever get a chance to read THE UNWRITTEN (which is ongoing, but the first eight issues are collected in trade), you really need to!

Ok, so I finally got my hands on this and read it. I had mixed feelings about it. On one hand, I loved the story, for all of the reasons you mentioned above. On the other hand, believe it or not, I was kind of put off by the artwork. Not that I can't appreciate how gorgeously done it was - and it was! - but it clashed with the more cartoony/stylized artwork in the original Sandman series and I had to keep reminding myself that it was the same Lyta Hall character I knew before. She was drawn/painted so differently that it felt like a different character.

Maybe it wouldn't have been as jarring if I hadn't just completed a re-read of the whole original series just beforehand, but there you have it, it's just how I reacted.

I'm still glad I got it, though, and it was definitely worth reading. I gave it four out of five stars on GoodReads.

I got so used to the different artists in the Sandman series that it didn't bother me. Then again, I prefer the art in this book to the style in the Sandman series, so that may be part of it. Also, I never liked how Lyta was portrayed artistically in Sandman. :)

Thanks for the heads up. I've read part of the Sandman series now I'm getting them from the beginning and reading through them.
Also I just started reading The Walking Dead. It is an awesome comic series (not a happy one but the writing is great).

Definitely finish reading THE SANDMAN before starting this. :)

I've got to give THE WALKING DEAD another shot. :)
