After reading his short story "Yellow Card Man" set in the same universe, I really wanted the novel as I love near future third world settings. However, the damn thing was all sold out at Worldcon.

They only had limited copies at Worldcon, but you can order it off of Amazon! :)

I was given this as a gift just in time to read it for a discussion on Goodreads. I liked, but didn't love it. Like you, I found myself emotionally distant. I just didn't like any of the characters and so had a hard time caring about what happened to them. I am curious enough to want to read the short story prequel, though; I didn't know there was another story in this world.

I appreciated the ecological themes of the book and it certainly made me think.

Yeah, the "prequel" story (such as it is) features a character that's in the novel, but like I said in the review, Bacigalupi changed the character's name in the novel. :)
