Not reading yet, but it's the next book on my list!

Can't wait to hear your thoughts!

I thought it was in California because the village used to be a vineyard (if I remember correctly), and there was ocean. My knowledge of American geography is limited, though ;-)

Re: Storm Glass - haven't read it, and the summary doesn't interest me. I liked Poison Study, but Magic Study was a bit too traditional fantasy for me. I own Fire Study (was cheap at the discount chain store), but I don't really know if I want to read it.

Have about 120 pages left to read of A. J. Menden's Phenomenal Girl 5, and would recommend it :-)

I saw your interview with the author, and I love her point! What most people don't realize, unless they live over on the east coast, is that there are wineries here too, and for that, there must be vineyards. :) There's actually quite a few wineries and distilleries in my region alone, which kind of surprises me.

Don't pick up STORM GLASS until you've read FIRE STUDY. You'll know with FIRE STUDY if you want to continue or not, even though STORM GLASS focuses on a new character (that you meet in MAGIC STUDY and FIRE STUDY).

Thanks for the rec!

Interesting that you picked it up due to positive reviews. I've only seen negative reviews of it thus far, and I'm not particularly attracted to zombies.

Well, I've seen some at Amazon, and I understand their points (the book feeling like a let down after all the hype), but it was a few select reviews, Tez's being the only one I definitely remember, that made me go for it. :) I'll read your link though, just to see what others are saying.

And I'm not attached to zombies at all. I've seen a few movies, incidentally read a couple of short stories earlier this year, but that's it. They don't interest me as a monster, but I thought the author incorporated them very well into this story.

Interesting. I know Jia personally (the pseudonymous author of the DA review I linked you), so her review held more weight for me than random Amazon comments. I think the major turn-off was plotting/worldbuilding inconsistencies--comments?

Oh, no doubt, there's questions raised that are not answered, but I know it's a series, so I'm reserving MOST of my judgment in that regard. However, her commentary on the fences didn't strike me as wholly accurate: it was my interpretation that the fences are made of a metal material, and I'm 99% sure that Mary mentions they had extra to repair the fences, which made me think that's how they expanded. The other questions raised about how planned and prepared this village was I think ties into the Sisterhood and the secrets they were keeping, and that answer isn't in the book, not by a long shot. I hope we learn more in later books ( ... )

Cool. I've been eyeing this book since I heard about it. I'll have to snag a copy.

I read this a couple weeks ago and agree with pretty much every thing you said. I didn't realize it was going to be a series so I was sort of disappointed when I came to the end and felt like I was left with so many questions. But knowing that there will be more, now I'm fine with it.

It really helps knowing it's the start of a series, because it makes you feel SO much better about the unanswered questions. I wish they'd made it obvious somewhere in the book (in the author's bio or something!) that it's the first of a series.
