November Challenge: The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin

Sep 09, 2010 23:48

And now, the results of the November Challenge!

Though I worry some of you may have cheated and looked at the comments and saw that of the four choices, the winner was the only one I owned, I'm not complaining! After 46 amazing votes, the winner is . . .

The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms (2010)
Written by: N.K. Jemisin
Theme: Fantasies (not urban) released in 2010 (which may or may not include hardcovers)
ISBN: 0316043915

Fortunately for those of you on a tight budget, this book is available as trade, not hardcover. So if you have to buy books instead of going to the library like me, you got lucky! Even better, in October, this title will be available as a mass market paperback. At least, that's what Barnes & Noble is telling me.

This title's been languishing in my slushpile for a few months. I've been wanting to read it, but just haven't been able to make the time. The timing is good for November, because the sequel, The Broken Kingdoms, will be published that month as well. Which means if this book pulls you in hook, line, and sinker, you can get the sequel as quickly as you desire.

Who can participate?

Anyone who's interested in the book. You don't have to have an LJ to participate in the challenge. Just read the book sometime between NOW and the month of NOVEMBER and then feel free to engage in discussion at the end of the month. Or, if you have a book blog of your own, post your review there and provide me with a link in mine. :) For your sake, I'll hold off posting my review until the end of NOVEMBER so no one feels rushed to finish the book. I want people to read at their own speed and to enjoy themselves.

Also, you DO NOT have to participate in the discussion to participate in the CHALLENGE, but you get points for both reading and commenting. While I love the discussion, I look very closely at the number of people who read the book for the challenge, so feel free to read even if you're not comfortable commenting! :)

As always, feel free to talk about the book challenge and encourage others to read what you are. After all, the more the merrier!

When do I participate?

Any time between NOW and November 30th. As long as you read the selection within this particular time frame, you've participated. This way, if you're a slower reader, you've got much more time. :) And if you're a fast reader, and want to participate in the discussion with the book fresh on your mind, then go ahead and wait until November!

How do I participate?

Get your hands on the book. You can buy, borrow, or swap, but please try and get your hands on the book. If you're having trouble finding this book, let me know and I'll try and point you in the right direction. This book is a 2010 release and will be re-released as a mass market in October, so I doubt you'll have trouble finding it new. Used, on the other hand, might be a different story...

Also: sign up when I post the reminder in November letting me know you're gonna try and participate. It's a good way for me to gauge just how many participants we'll have, and by November 1st, you should know if you can get your hands on the book or not. But don't delay! Get your copy now!

Okay, okay, okay! But what about NEXT'S month's challenge? Taking suggestions for that?

We started the year with YA, so I thought it'd be a nice gesture to actually end the year with YA as well. But I'm torn on the theme: should I do "YA Urban Fantasy/Paranormals" or "YA published in 2010 (which may or may not include hardcovers)"? Tell me your thoughts. Obviously, if you hate YA, this particular theme is not for you and you'll just have to sit tight until January's vote, but those of you who enjoy the genre, tell me which of the two themes appeal to you the most and if you have suggestions, I'd be happy to take them!
