So on my wish list for the next Trek movie is that there'll be more than one woman with a substantial role. (And that she'll have a Bechdel test passing conversation with Uhura...though since I can only recall one of those out of the past eleven Trek movies, I'm not exactly optimistic there ( Read more... )

I'd like to see Christine Chapel a bit more, and she's probably the most likely appearance to be seen. Since we didn't see Gaila on the Enterprise, it's possible she was on one of the destroyed ships at Vulcan. Saavik didn't show up until much later in the crew's history, and not being part of the original series, I have doubts we'll see her again for some time. Janice Rand is a possibility, though it's probably more likely we'll see Carol Marcus. Then again, this is all just my speculation, and I'm hardly enough of a Trek connoisseur to know all the women that have graced the crew's presence over the years.

....oh dear, I believe I've rambled on a bit. x_x Exactly why I don't normally respond to polls.

Chapel seems the most likely since she did get a shout-out this time round.

I would love to see Marcus, so long as she got some proper skience-y stuff to do independent of any relationship she has with Kirk. And I love that she ain't a fan of Starfleet (which I like to think is more than her just being pissed off at Kirk.)

See, now, that's a worry for me. Abrams said that his intent was to tell a human story set in space, instead of a space story with humans, which he did very well this time. But I'm worried he'll use the second movie to expand relationships that shouldn't be expanded. While the little glimpse of Spock/Uhura was appropriately small, I don't feel it would be appropriate to create a continuance in the second film. I mean, what're they gonna do? Pon Farr? Spock's supposed to be reserved and emotionless...ish. And there's supposed to be subtle slashy friendship moments between Spock, McCoy and Kirk. It's just not Star Trek without it.

Wasn't Rand in the first movie in Engineering? She was standing with Scotty working on the transporters...

Number One would be interesting, as an admiral maybe from whom Kirk must learn a thing or several--possible UST for Bones at that (because I think kickass women deserve to be shown as attractive, yes). More Chapel--maybe a face to go with the name. More other women of color in TOS would be fantasticals as well. And more Uhura. I'd love a backstory so I can know just how she became so awesomesauce, yes.

Aye, she was the transporter chief IIRC but I wanna see girls fixing the engines, darnit. Ahem.

More other women of color in TOS would be fantasticals as well.

It would be tots nifty to see Captain Alexander - a black woman and the first female captain we see in Trek canon. And apocrypha has her serving with Kirk before she got her own command.

Or an Asian or a South Indian or an Andorian woman--but yes! I'm all for a Skittles Sequel :-P

And I'm just saying--maybe Rand can be in there taking orders from Scotty--being his apprentice or something. :)

Moar Andorians would be awesome. THEY HAVE ANTENNAE. This makes me happy. One of my favourite things about Enterprise was they properly animated the Andorians' antennae.

And I'm just saying--maybe Rand can be in there taking orders from Scotty--being his apprentice or something. :)

If they gave Rand that role that would be Most Yayful, yes.

I agree that Chapel is most likely to turn up, but I don't think she'll be in a major role. Rand is also somewhat likely.

I would also love to see Number One...maybe she could be commanding another ship that's in trouble or something.

But I voted for Other. Carol Marcus needs an appearance. :)

And, sadly, I'm fairly certain that Gaila bought the farm in orbit around Vulcan. Wasn't she assigned to the Farragut? Seems like only the Enterprise survived that firefight.

Alas, I have not seen enough of TOS to be able to say which character should appear, but I certainly hope that one or more do!

Thanks for the mention of the Bechdel test though - I'm about to write an essay on the 'double exclusion of women from the hegemonic discourses of friendship' (!) and that is a massively useful example of how we really have not improved as much as we like to think we have.

It's intensely frustrating, yes. And then when a genre show does turn up that manages to pass it every ep, it goes and gets cancelled. (I am bitterly thinking of Middleman here.)

Though, cheeringly, there's a six part sixties Doctor Who serial that passes the test every episode.

None of the above. I want at least a couple more films establishing the Bridge crew as it stands before pulling in more people from all over. And please, not Janice Rand. Please, please, please.

Surely Saavik hasn't been born yet...

And likely never will be either, in this universe (seeing as the odds of her Vulcan parent just happening to be one of the few saved are pretty slim), but we can hope, right? :-\

We don't know how old she is, also the timeline has changed, yo.

Rand was not awful on the Excelsior, darnit!
