I am hunting high and low for the perfect refuse receptacle for my kitchen. It has to exist, I just cannot seem to find it. The “trash” bin that I want is a single free-standing unit that is pleasant to look at (ie. Stainless steel or white metal to match my kitchen), it has multiple openings, connected to different bags for trash, bottles, ( Read more... )

A friend has this in metal -- http://www.containerstore.com/browse/Product.jhtml?CATID=70622&PRODID=10020472 -- which is the closest i've seen to what you describe. but (half of) seattle collects aluminum and paper in the same container, so it may not have all the holes you need.

yes, the stainless steel kind are available, but not new for $50 . . . they are usually $100+++
Butterfly Recycler

I found this plastic one on the Container Store site:
Trio Plastic recycling container

or how about dedicating a cabinet to the cause . . .
If you have one of those corner, spinning cabinets.
You could get fancy and get a pull out drawer.

You could just put 2 or 3 seperate cans under your sink, or other cabinet, while you still have the issue of how to open it without getting your hands dirty, it's a possibility because you can leave the door open while cooking, or open it with your foot from underneath.

a bit of warning, every "step-on" trash can I've owned, even my nice stainless steel one, have broken in a relatively short amount of time. mostly because we used have a lot of traffic through our house during parties . . . but, still, i don't think i'll even invest $$ in a stainless step-on trash can again.

with a gamma seal lid...

lids are 7 bucks and they seal good with no odors... no it is not self opening... but those break with any amount of use...

the gamma seal bucket/lid comboa are also good for keeping rice and beans weevil free...

GOOD SEAL...
