This is probably the fic that nearly wasn't. Thanks to
blackbird_song , not only for a stellar beta, but also for remembering it long after I'd forgotten it.
Ianto and the Doctor, and Torchwood.
No warnings, low rating, no pairings (maybe background Jack/Ianto)
(
“You were at Torchwood. London.” )

He’s tired, and worn, but he doesn’t back down from the challenging stare. For one terrible moment Ianto Jones holds his ground against a Time Lord; the Time Lord backs down.
If the Doctor had ever loved anyone that much, the universe would have been torn to shreds by it.
They're both so clear-sighted in this and more than anything how very different they are comes through. Really, I'm still in awe at the characterisation.

What was I saying?
how very different they are comes through
Which is odd, because I started this thinking that actually, they were very similar. And then Ianto just ended up looking - I think - very young; and the Doctor ended up very old and world-weary (and it's just hit me now: no matter how good Matt Smith is, I'm going to really miss Ten).

The similarities come through as well - they're both so very ruthless and loyal in their ways.

God, I know. You know how they say that everyone has a doctor they think of as their doctor? I think Ten is mine (which yes, half our generation will be able to say, but still).

It's odd. I have a Doctor. I grew up in the Doctor-less gap (I was two when it went off air in '89; 18 when it came back in '05; and most people's Doctor is the guy they were watching at seven or ten). And then Tennant comes along with his awesome Ten and his geeky love and obsessive knowledge of Who that makes me feel that yes, he does know the Doctor inside and out because he was there and watching on its first run. And now he's going (and Matt Smith is also of the Doctor-less generation and doesn't appear to have the geeky love of it. Yet).
