happy new year! and LJ news

I hope everyone had a nice New Years!

Someone on my flist has posted this, and I found it interesting enough to pass it along: LJ troubles. I've ignored previous LJ-related kerfluffles, but I must admit, this doesn't look too good. My feeling has always been that LJ has so many users, I'd be surprised if they just got rid of it entirely, as it ( Read more... )

Yikes, thanks for the heads up on the LJ troubles. We still haven't investigated whether it's possible for us to retrieve any data from the dead computer, but if we can't, all the photos I've got left are stored here on LJ. I'd really rather not be stupid twice, so I'll be backing up, too.

Do we get to see pictures of the baby's room? Yay for less-expensive-than-retail changing tables! That's something that just takes up space after a while, so it's nice not to have to pay full price for it at the outset. Wheeee, baby! I can't wait!

P.S. I just had a look at the links- really cute stuff! I love the crib style, and man, do I ever wish there'd been Ikea around when I was doing the baby thing.

ooh cookieman is sad over your potential loss of photos. I've completely forgotten what happened to the old PC, so I couldn't tell him if it was a hard drive issue or not. :(

I should have backed up my LJ before now, so I'm glad this has given me incentive to do so. I'll limit my fretting to that, though - I'm not researching new journals to move to or anything just yet. Whatever happens will take a while anyway. They've put out another press release: hereIkea has been great! The changing table is very nice. I wasn't sure on the price, so I checked the name on Ebay and found two for sale within driving distance (I'd say 'in our area' but that's not entirely true. It was a bit of a scenic drive to pick it up. Still, it was 30 GBP, and in awesome condition.) The crib wood doesn't really match it at all, and the wardrobe in the room is yet again slightly different, but I've never been too inclined to be matchy-matchy anyway ( ... )

Can I give you a purchasing hint? Buy lots of muslin squares. They are wonderful for all sorts of things - putting over your shoulder when burping or just carrying a baby, putting over the head end of the mattress so you don't have to change the whole sheet when the baby has drooled/thrown up on it... They can also double as sheets for carry cots or bean bags (Emily liked being snuggled in a slightly upright position in a bean bag - she was safe but could see what was going on), and will do for emergency mopping up purposes like when the little one whizzes all over the changing table just as you have taken the nappy off.

Two of my nieces had babies last year, and muslin wraps are all the go. They use them for everything, but mainly for wrapping. Apparently the "in" thing is to wrap the baby up very tightly all the time, sort of like swaddling, I suppose.

So yes to this suggestion. :-)

Yes they seem to be really popular! There isn't a single baby book or magazine that I've checked that hasn't listed them as an essential. As I just said above, I'm likely to buy some off of Ebay. The only ones I've seen in shops have been ridiculously priced for just a stack of cloth!

Baby purchasing hints are always appreciated! Yes, I've heard this about the muslin squares. I was hoping to find a cheap source for them, as really, it's just muslin cloth, and why am I paying more because the packaging has babies all over it?? I've just checked Ebay and there seems to be a few sellers specializing it them. Thanks! :)

Oh! We had that cot for the girls, from Mothercare! What a coincidence! :-)))

I use LJbook every new year, to back up the previous year's posts and comments. Saves it all in pdf format.

It's a nice style! I am not 100% sure it's Mothercare, as we bought it at an NCT sale last year, but it has the same features and looks exactly the same. :D

Yes LJBook was the first site I checked out, but when I tried to use it I got an error saying too many other people were also using it. hah. I might go back and do it again, but in the meantime, I've got a copy saved with LJ Archive.

Re tinimaus suggestion - we just used cloth nappies for the same - over shoulder, on the bed to save the sheets etc. (From both ends!) They are truely multipurpose.

How long do you have to go - and what size are you short of? I am sure I have some second hand stuff I can send you, as well as knitting some boy stuff, as I have only knitted girl stuff!

That's very sweet of you! We've mostly been buying onesies (I think they're "babygros" here), as we figured those were the most useful, and we can build up from them. :D Some friends (and grandmothers!) have been sweet and bought a few outfits as well, mostly in the 6-9 month range. We're happy for all of them, as we know we'll get to them at some point.

At the moment we're lacking a bit in the smaller sizes, but I'm not too worried about it at the moment. We only have a few, literally, in that range, so we're likely going to pick up a few more at the local car boot or so. We do need hats, though, if you're itching to knit something! :D God knows it gets chilly here, and we've got exactly one hat at the moment. The poor dear.

I'm due 15th Feb. :o

Hats it is - I'd better get cracking then! You'll find he grows out of the smaller sizes really fast, which is why people tend to buy bigger sizes as presents. He may be a big baby, and then the smallest sizes will be too small. Baby grows are great when they are little, but the ones with feet in they will grow out of first, as they get bigger/longer quickly.

Its all very exciting isn't it. Its something totally amazing happening to your body/life and you just have to get swept a long with it. Enjoy it all!

yep, we actually specifically only bought the larger sizes, ourselves, as I anticipate a big baby (I was big, no surprise!) However, it seems as if everything is in this larger size, and we could probably use just a few things in the smaller size, for the first few weeks anyway. We'll just pick some up at the local car boot. No reason to spend much money on them, because as you say, he will grow out of them quickly!

I do enjoy feeling him roll around in there. He's getting big, though! I can't imagine what it must've been like for you with twins!

Ok late to the party. One of the best things we got for the kids in chilly MN were feety pajama like things that instead of legs was a big stack/sock with arms. It took forever for the kids to grow out of them and made changing them a snap because it was one zipper instead of eleven hundred snaps.
