Harry followed Luna as she skipped through Hagrid’s pumpkin patch towards the Thestral feeding ground. He smiled as she was distracted by a passing butterfly, a Flitterbloom plant, and even to listen as the wind whistled through the trees among other things. Her face grew more luminous with each stop. Everything seemed to touch something inside of her.
He had volunteered to help her take some food out to the Thestrals after noticing an older Ravenclaw boy following the whimsical blonde. Since the expression on the other boy’s face was not kind, Harry did not want to leave his friend by herself. He shook his head, repressing a laugh as she stopped to watch a Bowtruckle wander across the small fence near the patch.
“Luna? Are we planning on feeding the Thestrals today?”
She turned to him and gave a misty smile.
“They’re not going anywhere, Harry.”
With that, she continued skipping along, stopping every few feet or so when something else caught her eye. He gave up on suppressing the laugh, and she turned.
“You should smile more. There’s something really beautiful in a smile.”
He slanted a fond look at her.
“You look for beauty everywhere don’t you?”
She nodded.
“Of course. Doesn’t everyone?”
He just smiled. Returning his smile, she continued on her way. Hoisting the bag of meat further on his shoulder, he followed his quirky friend and mused on a line from some poetry Hermione had shown him.
“No reason can be asked or given why the soul seeks beauty.”
