The Tolkien community has lost one of its artists. According to the Tolkien Society website, Jef Murray passed away suddenly yesterday. (read more here)

His use of light and brilliant colors always attracted me to his work. I always enjoyed getting my copy of Amon Hen and seeing his sketches and paintings. His "Strider" is my favorite of his works ( Read more... )

He had such a unique vision of Tolkien's world... I'm glad he was able to share it with us.

I saw the announcement this morning and until you mentioned Amon Hen, it didn't click.

His work was always so full of fluid colour! @.@ I think he'll be missed. I can't say I've seen all the Amon's yet. I only have pdf editions from 218 onward and slowly reading them.

I realize now that when I typed "Amon Hen" I was thinking "Mallorn", because he did so many of that organ's full-color covers, but Amon Hen was always so filled with his sketches... such one of a kind works.

That's awful news! I have a print of his 'Legolas by the Sea', which I love. So sad to hear this. :(

I don't own any prints, but I always enjoyed his monthly newsletter. I conversed briefly with him via email a few times, mostly just thanking him when a story he'd written especially moved me. I would have really liked to have known him better.
