Study in macro and focal depth...

Jun 21, 2014 13:19

So, I was fiddling with the camera in the garden one evening this past week, using a 10x macro lens screwed onto my go-to 18-55mm zoom lens. I took a series of photos of a columbine bloom, focusing each time on a different "layer" of the flower as I looked down on it from above.

I love photography; even if I don't understand one word of what someone says about it. It's the results that speak loud and clear. And such a beauty of a picture(s). Mother Nature showing off her best and you caught it!

Thank you!

I'm completely self-taught when it comes to photography. I read articles a lot and have learned the terms so I know what equipment to buy, and when I find a photographer who's photos resonate, I look to see if they explain how they take photos. Viggo is one of those, of course, but I also love the work of a nature photographer from my state, Noppadol Paothong (he's Vietnamese--Missouri has a huge Vietnamese population). His work is just... *flails* His eye for composition and his skill at capturing the light and the perfect focal depth is astounding. http://www.nopnatureimages.com/ His photos seem to glow.

I guess I'm a little like the art students you see in museums, sketching and painting from the masters.

Thanks! It's a skill I'm just now really starting to hone. It'd help if I had a real macro lens but sometimes working with equipment that's less than ideal is fun in its own right, because the effects can be really interesting and unexpected.

Those photos are fantastic. And initially I thought the first one was an insect - that one was shot from the above as well?

Thank you! And oops, no... I wasn't very clear on that, was I. The first one is from the side. The flowers hang like little spurred bells from their stems. The other three *are* looking down on them from the top.
