It was actually quite fun, if a good bit of work. The design itself was quite simple: get big 2" diameter dowel. Drill holes of appropriate sizes (*snickersnicker*). Insert dowels of appropriate size and length (or, rather, insert wood. *snickersnicker*). My inner 12-year-old had a ball. It was great.
Well, it's a bit complicated, but comes down to a software issue. Thunderbird decided to update itself, causing my firewall to go berserk. In trying to fix that issue, I uninstalled said firewall, and attempted to replace it with a new one. New firewall made windows (a legit install, I might add) decide that it was not genuine and also caused my machine to crash completely and not respond to anything but the power button within about 30 sec to 5 min of each boot. So I got all my data off the computer via my linux install, and reinstalled windows not-quite-legally using my brother's copy. Which has now decided to be pissy. Grr.
That sounds really fun and very much a way to let your inner 12 year old run wild. *mutters giant chicken*
Did you close the firewall before uninstalling it? There use to be several that would crash your system if you left any processes running then uninstalled.

Windows is a bitch. What kind of problems are you having? Could it be something hardware that is messing with the software?
