(I might've linked that fan-produced video before but the production value is so amazing it's worth linking again)
[Brief update] At the moment I have no computer. I am posting this from my phone by laboriously typing it on a keyboard the size of the stick of chewing gum, alternating with some hilarious attempts to

I know we've never met before IRL, but I've got a Mac and PC (and I'm in the greater Vancouver area!) so if you need a hand with some data recovery from a backup and to get things like resumes into formats you can access on PCs let me know. If this is something I can do to help, I'm happy to assist :-)
Thanks for the offer. I'm on the Island though so it's a ferry trip to get there.
I'm really hoping they can do a straight copy of the data, though. As far as I could tell the hard drive should be okay, it's just the motherboard and such that's gone foom. They should be able to hook it up and extract the data, and once I have a straight non-backup copy I have a few options to access that on PCs. I'll keep your offer in mind though. :-)
There's a great computer access program with the local library system and also a job search specific computer lab available, but getting the data off the drives and in a format the PCs in those labs can access is the big thing. :-/
My laptop recently decided to melt (due, I have no doubt, to the hotness of Aaron Stanford and Amanda Schull from 12 Monkeys), so I feel your pain. Lucky for me my brother is a computer genius and managed to get my data off my hard drive. I don't know what I would have done otherwise! I hope you get yours sorted quickly and without too much pain. (Me hearty.)
I'm so used to dealing with technical issue myself and having a backup resource that having to get someone else see if they can fix it is driving me nuts. I still haven't gotten the drive info from them, and I keep getting a different person every time I call in who seems to have no idea who is doing what when and keeps asking questions I already answered with actually hand written notes etc when I brought them in. I am finding this experience frustrating. :-P

But yes if they can extract the data from the HDD then that's great!
But certainly keep the offer in mind! I'd love an excuse to get back to the island for non-work purposes!!!
