I never read these books, but so many of my friends are sad right now. They must have been very good books to touch so many. *hugs*

The Discworld books are the sort where you either really really like them or you don't. They started as a parody of the fantasy genre, but since moved into subtly written socio-political satire and comedy with a splash of the absurd in a well-developed fantasy world that happens to be balanced on the back of four elephants standing on a giant space-going turtle. Great wordsmithing and world-building, moments of epic wow, very British humour.

The early books can be a little less gripping than others, but each book stands alone and there are several character sets that interact and are focused on to varying degrees.
