Other sources of Yay for me in the article itself:
-IANTO IS IN THE PHOTO! (Yes it's an old promo shot, but still, any hope is nice.)
-Both John Barrowman and Eve Myles are signed on already, and there doesn't seem like there's any qualms from Barrowman re: Captain Jack getting neutered by network US TV.
-BBC Wales a co-production partner. :-)
-I really like the global aspect (UNIT!) because although in the Doctor Who 'verse, most weird crap happens in the UK, it doesn't have a monopoly on it. However, I hope they won't forget about the Rift in Cardiff and find a way to deal with that, even if it's a couple lines of dialog.
-Lucy Lawless. I haven't got the slightest clue how to react to Lucy Lawless. I'm stuck between 'Yay' and 'Eh?'
-With the mention of American actors, the ever so slight chance of Supernatural alumni being involved. It'd be only fair since we snagged Ianto's cyber-woman girlfriend for 'Magnificent Seven'
No spoilers for the new Torchwood, beyond what's in the article, if they exist yet.
I don't intend to watch Spartacus and don't have access to it anyway, so I'm not fussed about spoilers for that. I think I read a summary once that gave a basic rundown of the, uh, plot....
No spoilers because this is all I have heard. Basically, if in some way Ianto is back, then I'm in, although I don't get Starz, I do buy DVD's. No Ianto, no me, not even Lucy Lawless, who I do love, can get me back.
I'm kind of torn on Ianto. I sort of wish he'd had a better end somehow, but... I think story-wise, if they leave him dead, as long as the emotional ramifications for the other characters are very present in the series, I'd be okay with it. However, this is a series with very many avenues for bringing a person back to life, or having them reappear, so Ianto could very well come back under many guises. It's like Supernatural that way. :-) Hopefully the series will work out and we'll get a chance to see which way they go with it.
I can't say I wouldn't be reacting about Ianto no matter how he died, but his death on top of Owen's death, on top of Tosh's death was just one death too many and all of the wrong characters for me. I don't care much for Gwen and could have coped with her dying, but the show managed to kill the characters that interested me AND the ones that made Jack more interesting, while leaving Gwen, who I think makes Jack's character far less interesting. So that was my problem. They killed off ALL my favorite, non-immortal characters and I just don't trust them again. Plus the way Ianto died was stupid, on everyone's part.
I definitely see your point; it's been quite a blood-bath. They've got Gwen labelled as the 'viewpoint character' because she had the least experience with weird at the start, so odds are she won't die. Unless they develop a new character in the new series, coming in from a mundane background to be a new 'viewpoint character', since Gwen's no longer likely to be the least experienced, in which case she'll lose her 'unkillable' shield.
I do hope they find a way to bring back Ianto, or maybe even Tosh and Owen, even if it's just in flashbacks or ghost form or alternate realities. The realities of production cost might make that unlikely though, and... I don't know. Non-immortal characters coming back to life cheapens the impact of a mortal threat in the story. Although Ianto's death was very contrived. :-P
