It's been a long time since I've seen the episode, but I think the deities were of the same variety as in the christmas episode, where they killed them with stakes and they were people-eaters.
I don't /think/ Supernatural is a belief-makes-it-real/powerful universe, but they change the rules around enough that I'm not entirely sure.
True enough. Though it could also be interpreted as the exception that proves the rule, as it was a special circumstance, a symbol, and not just belief itself.
For me, the biggest thing against it being a belief-universe is the fact that the exorcisms and holy work, even though the people performing them have had no faith at all.
Matt Frewer also starred in The Stand mini-series which is good for a chuckle with regards to him being Pestilence.
And for all the inaccuracies and tongue-in-cheekiness of the deities, at least they're making an effort to recognize other religions on the show. It's very almost... American Gods in a way.
And I had total Shining flashbacks with the Ganesh/elephant scene so it worked for me on many levels.

Right now I'm going with the thought that Gabriel was the Trickster for a long time while Lucifer was in his cage, so I think (hope) that he knows how to fake an Archangel death as well as all those Trickster deaths he has faked throughout the years. Either that or God of whoever brought Castiel back will do the same for Gabriel, because I will miss him. He was a great recurring adversary.
This wasn't my favourite ep ever, and the casual slaughtering of gods people actually worship in the world these days made me kinda uncomfortable (although is it any different from the Judeo-Christian God not giving a damn? Not sure about that one), but on the whole, this was a pretty enjoyable ep. Apart from Gabriel snuffing it. But of course God can bring angels back, right (Castiel), so He's hardly going to leave one of his Archangels dead is He? Right??? Right???????
I did like Kali though (Rekha Sharma was in an ep of Dark Angel if I remember right!) and her "No" before Dean had even asked the question. (She'd choose Gabriel over Dean? Sure, Richard's cute and all but...DEAN!)
I remember Doctor, Doctor! And PSI Factor (although I never watched it.) And of course Mark Sheppard's dad (W. Morgan Sheppard) was in Max Headroom...

Season one was ...meh. Interesting creepy inestigations, but no real characters. Season 2 onward got addictive. Worth looking up, particularly if you like X-Files at all.
