MOON (2009)

I came across this awesome science fiction movie after hearing a lot of buzz about it on the internet, especially when it came time to list out some science fiction movies. I have not heard a single negative criticism about this movie and in fact many people mentioned how underrated the movie was and how it should have been considered for award season around 2009/2010 but was grossly shut out. So I finally got around to watching it last year; you could read my initial review of the movie over here.

What's really compelling about this movie is that it is able to meld the science fiction genre with drama without being too heavy on the technical aspects of the genre. It manages to be a thrilling movie that leaves its audience guessing while retaining the essense of the genre whereby large themes are tackled on such as the value of the individual. Sam Rockwell gives such a wonderful and intense performance and really carries the movie (since he's pretty much the only character you see for most of the story); under anyone else it would have become boring or less compelling but Rockwell is such a character actor that he's totally in his element here.

Like Sunshine (entry), Moon is definitely one of the best science fiction movies that have come out recently that's not associated to any franchise or reboot or whatnot. It feels reminiscent of the old school sci-fi classics (I've never seen 2001: Space Odyssey but this movie definitely reminds me of it) but it obviously has its own atmosphere that makes it both futuristic and dramatic. Definitely worth checking out, hence its inclusion on my list of sci-fi and fantasy things =)
