Thanks very much for includiing that link; one for the bookmarks.

I was intrigued by the verses you quoted, as they were different from the ones in my mind. When I went to the site, it turns out I was familiar with the 1st edition and you were quoting the 5th. It was news to me there was so much variation between then editions.

I think I prefer the imagery of noose of light to shaft of light, but mostly I'm in love with the rampant capitalization of the later editions. :} They have so much passion and voice - I hear them more than I read them. It does show how much leeway Fitzgerald took, even within his own translations. And other people's translations - they may be more linguistically accurate, may even be closer to the original intent of the verse (I haven't studied it enough to know), but nothing moves me like Fitzgerald.
