I always thought the same thing. wtf ur security officers no matter how much of a jerk Kirk was being you can't let officers beat each other. In the novel tie-in, Cupcake and the others try to intervene but Spock overpowers them but at least they tried.

i see we were both thinking the same thing at that moment.
