:-D Kosuke Kitajima!! :-DD Brendan Hansen!! What a great story. I really enjoyed it.
I've heard that Kitajima's attitude really has alienated himself from a lot of competitors. It's funny because here (I live in Japan) he's made out to be so humble and amazingly nice and a great sportsman. I'm sure the real Kitajima lies somewhere in between the two stereotypes.
I love the whole theme of "the end," too. Honestly, I doubt either swimmer will be around for 2012. Right after Kitajima won his second gold this time around, he said that he was going to be retiring right after Beijing. (But that's been hushed up majorly by the media, so I'm not sure what's happening with him.)
Sorry to make such a long and rambling comment. In short: thank you for writing this and I hope you'll be inspired to write more! :-D
I'm kinda interested now to see what's going to end up happening with both of them, swimming-wise. And I didn't realize how the Japanese saw Kitajima. Funny that he'd come off in two totally different ways.
I have to admit that when I started writing this (twice) he was actually one way or the other: on the first try he was an ass and on the second he was too 'sterotypically' Japanese--the thing read like a damn haiku. So I'm really glad to know that in the end I found a balance.
This is beautiful! How haunting but beautiful it must be to be there at night. I like this part especially: Kitajima can feel it when the American laughs and even though there is no sound at all it is loud enough to banish the ghosts from the pool. They are only here. Now.
I was hoping to a find a fic about these two so thank you for sharing! :)
And just a little fanning in return: I love your icon so I checked out the rest of your icons and then realized that you're hobbitholes. (From whom I've taken an icon here and there in the past. Credited, of course, lol. ^^) Wonderful stuff.
