I've spent some time in Iraq and Afghanistan on shitty satellite links and more time in Italy on shitty cell phone internet and chances are I'm going to be spending a lot more of my life on the end of more shitty internet connections until I stop travelling or trying to find work in third world countries and/or combat zones. Why are you asking for it for all IM types? It's an exercise in delay and futility, especially maintaining support for each type as they go through their little tweaks. This is part of why big multi-client apps have issue at times. Also, since this would be dual-sided, who cares that much about the specific IM transport? People who would be willing to use it would most likely be willing to click on whatever transport IM came up in the middle ( ... )

I use GAIM with OTR under Linux. All of the people that I need to chat securely with - that is, those that take security seriously - already use GAIM/OTR. So far, nobody who really is serious about security has insisted on using a crappy client or protocol. Since the security of my messaging also depends on the reliability of the person on the other end (for instance, not logging in clear text or writing passwords on sticky notes), I appreciate a slight technical barrier to ensure the actual dependability of those I chat securely with ( ... )
