Deadpool Pulp (and why it was awesome)

Jan 25, 2011 16:16

So, who here read Deadpool Pulp? The last issue had been out for a month now, and if you haven't read it yet I really can't recommend it highly enough. It's a very different style to the mainstream universe - dark and gritily realistic (as required for any pulp/noir title) - and it features a very unusual take on Deadpool, but it tells a ( Read more... )

Interesting. I'll have to invest in it, awkward art and all. Deadpool makes for the queerest noir comic ever. hahahahaha.

There is a lot of unambiguous Deadpool/Outlaw to fill out their het quota, but that rescue scene... damn. Slashy, slashy stuff. :3

I am so torn over the art. Sometimes it works really well, other times it looks like someone turned the contrast up too high by accident and blacked out half the action. Could've done with a little less shadow in a few places.

Queer meant as being different from the conventional, not queer as in gay. xD; But it wouldn't be Deadpool without some semblance of slash about. >8] And I'm glad for it.

About the pages you posted, what only really got me was how thick everyone is. Thick, broad, and the lines on the faces sometimes is a little too ugly for me. ROFL I'm not shallow at all... >_>;

Haha, been a while since I've heard queer used in that context. I don't think it's a particularly unusual noir story myself - I'd say noir has had more effect on Deadpool here than Deadpool's had on noir. Mostly, it's just a Cold War story about a crazy secret agent.

Actually I'd say everyone's thinner than usual - no unrealistic bulging muscles for a change! The art's not exactly what you'd call pretty though, no, very solid lines and lots of black. I do find some of the close-up shots quite attractive though, and it's far from the ugliest Cable and Deadpool have ever had to put up with.

Lawrence Campbell's art is amazing but it's almost a crime to have it coloured. Personally, I didn't find any panels hard to follow, but he does use a lot of black, which I think tends to work better in black and white. Check his Punisher gallery to see what I mean - http://www.getcampbell.com/page2.htm

I liked Pulp. It was a nicely told story, the characters were different but recognizable and the ending brought it close to our continuity so it left me with that satisfied feeling that while circumstances may vary, some things stay the same. One of the best I read last year.

You're right, the art is gorgeous in black and white.

The parts that got me were mostly scenes which cut back and forth between characters who's distinguishing features were lost under all the shadow and a couple where speech bubbles were misattributed. There were a lot of scenes that worked really clearly despite the lighting and I'd agree it's definitely good art, I just wish they'd varied the different characters' hair a bit more and got someone to double check the speech bubbles.

*nodnod* I took a lot longer to say this in my own review, but that's pretty much spot on what I thought of it too.

You have intrigued me. I think I will go pick this series up.
And Wade barking like a dog while being tortured made me giggle and then feel kinda bad about it.

Believe me, it is well worth doing :3

made me giggle and then feel kinda bad about it.

I think that's pretty much the essence of Deadpool, no?
