Hi, I got here from dA. Great insight in Theon's situation, I never looked at it from this way - that being a hostage he had no rights at all. For some reason I always treated it as a temporary situation. Maybe because I would act with my hostages as Danny did, not the way it actually works.
Indeed what he did was foolish, childish and naive, he never had any chance against Ramsay. For this foolishness bringing unnecessary pain to others he has paid, but I can't help pitying him. And can't wait what his further story is.

Yeah, Theon's chapters are the part I wait most for in the forthcoming TWoW (along with Sansa's and of course the Lannisters'.)

Theon's condition as hostage is permanent throughout Balon's life, unless the people who settled the pact (namely Ned, Robert and Balon himself) reversed it beforehand. As far as I understand it, Robb couldn't lift the hostage-ness even if he wanted to, for example. If the War of the Five Kings had never started, Theon was likely to die a hostage, as a proof of the Greyjoys' loyalty even after Balon's rule.

The way the Yunkish generals treat Groleo is a fair example of what may happen to hostages. Daenerys is even more deluded than Theon on that regard. (Sorry, but I dislike Daenerys as a character.)

What one king did another might undo. If not there would be no way Stannis could make Jon into Lord of Winterfell (if Jon agreed to it). The people who settled the pact are dead, except of Balon, for a moment longer. In the moment when Theon leaves to the Iron Islands as envoy of the brand new King of the North he cannot be a hostage anymore. Other way Robb would never let him go out of his reach. Pity Theon screw it all completely, but then if he didn't and yet the Red Wedding happened he would be at Robb's site, thus dead.
I almost wish the movie scene where Theon swears fealty to Robb happened in the book, I think it's only movie add on. "Brother now and always". The heavier his treason will sound in the series after such oath.

Ha, I like Dany, though she mad a lot of stupid decisions in ADwD. But I'm always forgetting how young she and Jon are.

Ah, but Robb never decreeded that Theon wasn't an hostage anymore. He simply forgot that he was one when he chose Theon as messenger, going against Catelyn's advice.

I still haven't watched the series. It will be broadcast from 11/11 in Italy!

I like your analysis and I can see why Theon is fascinating in that respect - but I can't like him more because even though you are right, he could have chosen differently ( ... )
