look, at least I didn't buy any more shoes

So today I went to the post office in downtown Palo Alto to mail some packages, and on my way to the grocery store afterwards, I did a little shopping. The bead store was having a sale on some of their strings, and I got a string of black pearls for $30 and a jade pendant for $20.

I made this:

Pearls and jade, it reminds me of a fantasy novel I read once )

jewelry, crafts, photos

That is a nice piece. Although you'd probably have to wear it without any other jewelry, because it would overpower any earrings or such that you'd pair it with.

Yeah, I don't know--I was thinking if I got some more pearls, I could maybe do like bunches of them with some jade beads? Something clustery. I just feel naked without earrings. I might wear some silver hoops or something as placeholders. :p

Silver or gold studs would also work well as placeholders. I don't think that matching earrings would do the necklace any favors, because they'd have to be so big that, in combination with the necklace, they'd overpower your face.

Yeah, I think you're right. I'm wearing it with silver studs and small hoops today.

That turned out beautiful. I don't think I would have considered pairing the jade with the black pearls, but it's really lovely. I may have to try that color combination in my own beading.

Yeah I don't think it would have occurred to me either, but that looks really nice!

Aw, thanks. :-)

I actually picked up the pendant first and was thinking I'd just buy it and wear it on a chain, but then I noticed that the black pearls, which I really liked, kind of had the color of the jade in their irridescent sheen. And I do like the light/dark contrast.

Ooh stunning!

I'm also translating the prices into English and thinking Wow!

I did my own retail therapy yesterday - lush products, body shop body butter and a fluffy white cardi from Monsoon. I also took a risk on a tangled £3 sale necklace in Accessorize - which has lots of rings and dangly bits. I was hoping it would all interlink like the one you were wearing at Wiscon, but it turns out to be more linear. Still good though.

Thanks. :D

Is that "wow, cheap" or "wow, expensive"? :p I'm lucky that I really prefer choker-length necklaces; otherwise I would have needed more than one string of the pearls.

Unfortunately, the one I was wearing at WisCon was so cheap that it has already started to go green. I did get it at Wet Seal. I'll have to keep an eye out for that style, because I really like it, too.

That was "wow, cheap" - for semi-precious stones.

I can't wear choker length stuff - I really hate feeling stuff right up to my neck.

Oh - look - google chat.

Cool

It's only a matter of time before you complete that transition into a mermaid, isn't it?

That looks lovely! I wouldn't have thought they'd go together, but it works really well.

Aw, thanks. I really like the dark/light contrast, and the pearls' sheen actually kind of picks up the color of the jade.
