nature, nurture, they're both against me

From my father's LJ, on having forgotten his water bottles for a bike ride:

It's one of those obstinate things about the physical world. It's so damn consistent. If I were one of the family of Amber, I could just shift things a bit to a Shadow with full water bottles in the cages, but... nope, doesn't work.In case you were wondering, THIS is why I ( Read more... )

Excuse me if I succumb to a moment of skiffy envy.

I love my dad dearly (he was my Best Man at my wedding) but has probably read about 10 books in his life that he hasn't been forced to...

...whereas I inherited a compulsion to buy books and music even when I have no money, no time to consume them, and no room to PUT them. :p

Actually, the Chronicles of Amber are a particular favorite from my childhood; aardvark_gumbo didn't read them to me, as he did others, but they were around the house and I read them myself in junior high and adored them.

I saw the entire collected Amber novels in B&N a few weeks ago, and I was oh so tempted. Then I realized that I just don't need any more goddamn books in my room, and it cost $30 or something. *sigh*

I have the first two book club collected editions--they leave off with the last of the Corwin books, but I was never into the Merlin ones anyway. I got them off Amazon marketplace sellers a few years ago; I think it was probably $7 for both of them, including s&h. What's the collection at B&N look like?

It was big, and paperback, and had all of them, Corwin and Merlin. Haven't been back there inna while, so no solid memories.

I would oh, you know, die if I found out MY dad had an lj. But he wouldn't.

That's kind of cool though.

Yeah, he's had it for awhile. He got it soon after my zombie library entry. I guess he got tired of leaving anonymous comments.

It's okay, I can filter him out if I need to. :p

That is a beautiful thing. My father's a nerd, but he's only a history nerd. He doesn't do SF/F nerdiness.

I inherited it from both sides. My mother used to read LotR at least once a year for quite some time; she might still, I'm not sure.

He got me my first Tarot deck for my 12th birthday, I think partly because he was tired of me begging him for readings. :-)
