Firing up the ancient technology (advisory: some geeky content)

We possess a venerable scanner, that I'm sure cost £200 when we bought it quite a number of years ago - it was bought somewhat at the last minute to scan photos for the first issue of Dark Times in 1996. I had not been going out with cally_tmk for very long back then ( Read more... )

We accept we probably ought to get a new scanner sometime

A new (or second-hand) PCI SCSI card would probably be cheaper. I think I paid a fiver for a rather nice one last year. Of course, this is dependent on driver support.

That's not a bad idea - I suspect that the state of Linux driver support may have come along some way since I lasted looked several years ago - the SANE Mustek SCSI backend homepage at least mentions our scanner in passing.

I may even have a PCI SCSI card somewhere anyway...

I've been running Linux (Red Hat, then Vector) on SCSI drives in PCs for about 10 years now and have never had a problem with SCSI cards, although I gather it's a good idea to stick to well known makes (I _think_ mine's Adaptec), not bargain bin ones.
I'm impressed that you have an older PC than my P333 which I built, rebuilt and messed with over time, until I could no longer get Socket 7 CPUs or baby AT boards to fit the case (so old it still has a turbo button).
Our scanner is an absolute antique too (TWAIN), but then again, so rarely needed that we can't be bothered to get another.
The thing Linux really doesn't do - as far as I've ever found - is printing . . . . nightmare!
