I like this a lot -- especially the way it sets up a difference between what Jack looks like and how he really is.

Then his grandmother had died, she did it gently and peacefully as she used to do everything in her life, but it left a hole in Jack’s small heart.

That's lovely and sad. Poor Jack! But I like the idea that his love of reading reminds him of his grandmother.
