A lot of passion about this issue

I respect the fears and concerns
of those who seem to feel threatened
by "marriage" being viewed as a
civil law contract, but as we are talking
about the terms and definitions and
limitations to civil law, what else should it be?
I think most Americans would rebel at the
idea of living in a theocracy; however,
any time you use scripture or religious
belief as a REASON for adding to or
changing civil law, you are arguing for
[using] theology to determine [state] law.
That's not what civil law should be about.
The question is one of government and
civil law. Therefore, I think that religious
concerns are not relevant.
If what really concerns you is parental rights
in determining what their children are taught
in public school, then work towards a law
