I actually had an eventful weekend, but of course the one time I have something interesting to relate I can't write about it because Someone I Know would be terribly embarrassed if it got out. This one extremely eventful...event at the beginning of the weekend led to the rest of the weekend being more than usually uneventful, and also led to the ( Read more... )

Uh, my lovely Lanos cost $10,000.00, and neither is it girly or sissy or a hatchback.

Yours is a manual though, isn't it? I need an auto. Not sure Daewoo auto gearboxes are all that good. Will investigate - might find one that's OK.

You can't wrong with a Mazda. They retain their value and have fabulous gear boxes in them (both auto and manual). You should be able to pick up a decent 323 with 10 grand. However, if you want a later model go for a 1.5L (not 1.3) 121. Mazdas just keep going and going.

I've heard a lot of good things about Mazda. My old Meteor was basically a Mazda 323 with a Ford badge, and it ran fairly reliably for nearly twenty years before my mother finally killed it. The recent ones are meant to be good too but a bit out of my price range.

I'll definitely look at them, anyway. Thanks for the advice. :-)

You can get a very decent Camry (probably 97/98) for that and a slightly younger and also decent Corolla (maybe 98/99) if you want something smaller and more fuel efficient.

I'm a Toyota girl, so you're not going to get me recommending anything else. Mum has a stack of friends who own and love Corollas, and Dad and I both own Camrys. My Camry is about to turn 15, and it still drives like a car about ten years younger.

My mum's a Toyota fan too. She has a mid-80s 4Runner and she's madly in love with it. The fact that Top Gear was unable to totally destroy a Hilux despite drowning it for several hours in the sea, putting it in the path of a wrecking ball and setting it on fire says a lot for Toyota's build quality too. *g*

Anthony's dad has a Corolla and he's not too happy with it. He says it's OK for short trips but anything longer than an hour or so and it's really uncomfortable. I know being one of five people in one was bloody awful. Won't know until I test drive one, anyway.

Economy is a consideration but we're used to feeding a Skyline so most things would be an improvement, even though it's a boring non-turbo Skyline. Other problem is that the Skyline is fun to drive, so I don't want a boring car. :-P Hence my refusal to drive one of those sissy girly hatchbacks. I guess I'm really looking for a compromise between economy and fun.

Yeah, the Camry isn't exactly fun. It's more sensible and safe *g*

I don't think I have any fun cars to recommend, simply because Toyota doesn't really have any *g*
