I showed off a little circuit at Dorkbot that I'd made up on a breadboard. It's basically just a brushless DC motor from a CD-ROM drive, hooked up to three comparators and some LEDs. The three hall-effect sensors in the BLDC motor generate about 150mV, and change polarity as the motor is turned by hand. This makes a contactless rotary position ( Read more... )

That's very cool John :) I love seeing electronics getting re-puposed like that as it gives an understanding of how they work. I bet you hadquite a crowd!

I thought of you yesterday as I picked up a magazine guide to setting up a workshop, and it featured lathes. I so need space for a little workshop. It's exclusive to Smiths if you want to pick up a copy.
