Believe it or not, I have a friend who is the curator of meteors for the Vatican Observatory. This is certainly not a meteor but I bet he's seen fallen artifacts before. I'm going to point him at your post.

Wow, thank you. I've also sent a note to CORDS, and a local friend (this guy) is interested in it as well and wants to test to see what it actually is.

Curator of meteorites, I should say. Curating meteors would be a difficult and dangerous task.

OK, I heard back from him, got no joy, then forwarded it to another friend who is a flight engineer at JPL. He speculates but doesn't know. My other contact at JPL is a robotics/autonomous motion expert so probably no point in asking him ( ... )
