Although I suppose I should've stopped reading the wiki entry after a couple of paragraphs.
A while ago,
alexandral or
queenofthorns posted about the BBC North and South and said it just might rival their Pride and Prejudice production. Of course, I want to read the book first, so I was looking at the entry on wikipedia to get a general plot outline. I wish I hadn't, I wish I'd just gotten the book and read the damn thing with no knowledge beforehand. Now I know ahead of time who proposes to the main character and I'm quite irritated with myself. The second he's introduced I'll "know" where it's going. I didn't spoil myself as to the end, although I did catch a subtitle saying "similarities to P&P" and "overcoming objections" or somesuch. Dammit.
Imagine being 19 and reading Pride and Prejudice for the first time, not knowing anything about the book or the plot, having never seen one of the multitude of versions out at that point. Darcy's proposal to Lizzie at Charlotte and Mr. Collins' home (
not in a stupid forest!) was one of the best scenes I'd ever read, I totally didn't see it coming.
I made a quick trip to the library today to pay off a fine for a lost book, and picked up Haruki Murakami's Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World for the second time; they didn't have Dance Dance Dance, I'll have to order it.
I find myself torn right now, between embarking on a 19th-century bookathon, or indulging in some cyberpunk.
