It is a holiday tradition. It is Rosh Hashanah--the Jewish new year, more or less.

[Yes, in the middle of fall. What of it.]

This is one of the ways to mark the holiday that I can do here.

There is the sounding of the shofar, which takes place in the synagogue. Prayer. Some traditional foods.

It is meant to be a quiet day of introspection, the beginning of the time we consider the past year and the final time to make amends for sins of the past year.

For today? Not much other than what I have already mentioned, though Rosh Hashanah marks the beginning of the Days of Awe, which is a time to consider sins of the previous year and seek reconciliation with those we may have wronged.
