Trees, Stars, Aurora! (Christian Mülhauser)

Feb 09, 2012 17:28

From Nasa's Astronomy Picture of the Day today - Christian Mülhauser's vid of the aurora... When I was a kid in Australia I desperately wanted to see one, or at least to see a picture of one that was better than the black and white blur in the Encyclopaedia. Now we have this...

This was filmed in Norway, but it makes me miss Alaska!

space and time, this magic world, aurora, wonderful things

Really spectacular. I remember as a small child in Northumberland (so pre 1950) being taken outside at night to see the northern lights. I have never seen them again but my huband (who stays up half the night) has, once, in Manchester, and went and found a neighbour who was also awake, to share the delight.

Were they commonplace from Alaska? Or just clearer and more wonderful? Did you photograph them?

Auroras are common in Alaska! Well, in the winter, when it's dark enough... *g* And clear and wonderful too. I did try to take some photos, but I didn't have a digital camera back then, and to get the really good pics you need a long exposure and a tripod. Somewhere I have a few blurred attempts, but... Actually I should have some blurred attempts at photographing the aurora as seen in the Shetland Islands too - I'll have to see if I can find those as well! Maybe this weekend will be a sorting weekend... *g*

I saw the lights once in the Isle of Man too, but they were very blurry, and it's only because I knew what the lights looked like really, compared to smoke and cloud and so on, that we realised what they were. My mum said that they quite often had reports on the late night radio station saying that the lights could be seen, though.

Thanks so much for turning me on to this site. I started subscribing last week, and I'm just blown away by some of the photographs.

It's a great site, isn't it! And every now and then there's something completely new and different too, like the "little planet" pictures, which I rather adore!

Beautiful! Thanks for this. Seeing the Northern Lights "in person" is one of th items on my bucket list! I've been to Alaska several times, but never in the right season to see them. Plans are to go visit next February. Meanwhile, I will just watch this a few more times!

Oh, you're going to my favourite Alaska! I lived there for a few years, and loved looking up at the night sky to find them... it took me a whilst to stop doing that once I got back here, though I do see other fab things instead... I hope you'll let us know all about your trip next year!

They really are - I miss going outside and looking up at the sky and there they are... it even made going to the outhouse in the middle of the freezing and dark night something a bit magical... *sighs*
