There was something heavy on his chest, preventing him from breathing. Stones. He could remember now; an entire wall had collapsed on him. Had he died?
"Charlie!" called a familiar voice. "Charlie, stay with me. Charlie..."
"Fred... Fred, where are you?" Charlie muttered in reply. "I can't see you..."
He slowly opened his eyes. There were no rocks on him, though the pain in his chest was still very real. The light was hurting his eyes, but he could see already that he was lying in a bed, and he could distinguish a white ceiling, and pale curtains drawn around his bed. With a job like his, he was more than used to this type of rooms; he immediately knew that he was in hospital. Why he was here, though, he could not remember.
He stirred slightly, and noticed that someone was sitting next to him... A woman, with long, dark hair. "N-nadia?" Charlie called, hesitantly. He was confused. Was he in Romania? "Nadia? Nu înţeleg... fratele meu... Fred... unde?" (Nadia, I don't understand... my brother, Fred... where?) he asked in very poor Romanian. Charlie had never managed to master the language very well; he had only known a few words here and there.
He closed his eyes, wincing. Whatever had happened to him, it had been very painful.
