Professor McGonagall sat at her old desk, eyeing another CV that had been sent by owl post that morning. It was an unexpected letter indeed: Arabella Figg of Little Whinging had written expressing interest in the Muggle Studies position. It was the first and only application McGonagall had received for that subject; compared with Transfiguration and Defense Against the Dark Arts, Minerva supposed that Muggle Studies looked a bit unglamorous. When Minerva first read the letter that morning, she chuckled to herself and dismissed the idea almost immediately. As the day went on, though, the idea started to make more and more sense to her. Who better to teach about muggles than a Squib who has been living with them for decades? Perhaps she would ask Harry Potter his opinion.
Professor McGonagall checked a clock on the wall, a bit too eager for a reason to chide Harry for lateness, but it was still only ten til six. The only real irritant here was her own impatience. She hoped that tonight, or some other night during their lessons, she would be able to get the real story of what happened last year. What task had Dumbledore assigned him? Why did he need the Diadem of Ravenclaw? How did the Diadem help him defeat He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named?
Minerva looked around her old classroom. She had chosen here to instruct Harry here rather than her office because she did not want the presence of Dumbledore's portrait to influence him, even if Dumbledore was almost certainly sleeping in his frame. Although she was no longer officially Transfiguration instructor, she never bothered cleaning her classroom of her personal effects; perhaps the reason she found nobody suitable to take the post was that she herself was not ready to give it up.
"Oh, where is Potter?" she suddenly said aloud. Realizing that she was alone, and slightly embarrassed for her outburst, Minerva looked again at Ms. Figg's CV. "Arabella at Hogwarts," she mused to herself, "Wouldn't she like that?" She continued to turn the idea in her head until Harry entered the room.
