Hermione couldn't help but be distracted by the bustling crowds on the London streets. There was a small part of her that was always looking over her shoulder, expecting Bellatrix to be there, and quite frankly it was getting to be quite a bother.
She'd come into London to get Ginny's gift and to test herself actually. She needed to readjust to the Muggle world and her parents while attempting to understand were really quite clueless.
She browsed several bath stores, picking up bubble bath, and other assorted items for the loo. Ginny had told Hermione back at Hogwarts that she rarely got the loo to herself and if she did it was only because everyone else was gone. Hermione thought that perhaps this might be the summer that Ginny actually got to enjoy a bit of time in the loo since most of the Weasleys were working.
Hermione's mind wandered to her upcoming NEWTs and she couldn't help but wonder if Ron and Harry were going to go back. She and Ron hadn't had a real moment to sit down and talk since she came back from Australia and she was still cross with Crookshanks about taking Harry's letter.
Ron had finally asked her on a real date and Hermione's lips turned up in a grin as she crossed the sidewalk. A man bumped her shoulder and Hermione instinctively reached for her wand, grasping the handle tightly in her hands, and she took a great gulping breath as the man pushed past and up the street.
Hermione knew it wasn't logical to be this wary of strangers but she'd been so afraid for so long she wasn't sure how to live without just the tiniest bit of fear. A little fear was healthy, Hermione had read a variety of books on the topic, but this fear--it wasn't quite normal.
Hermione took another deep breath and ducked into the first shop she saw. Her eyes widened slightly and she felt her face heat. How she managed to step into a lingerie shop she would never know but she couldn't resist having a look around. She ran her hand over the fabric of the nightgowns, enjoying the way the satin almost caressed her skin, and her cheeks flamed when she suddenly had the image of Ron seeing her in it.
She wandered deeper into the store until she came to a gowns more appropriate for herself and Ginny. She thought she knew Ginny's size and quickly picked one out. Hermione's gaze wandered back to the satin gown she had admired a few moments before and she impulsively rushed to pick one out. The black satin made her hand look almost alabaster and she couldn't resist it. She took the two gowns to the counter, carefully counted out pounds to the cashier, and waited while the clerk gift wrapped Ginny's.
Hermione lingered a few more minutes at the counter before picking up her packages to leave. She smiled as she passed the nightgowns and thought to herself that sometimes even a bookworm needs to feel pretty.
