George closed his eyes, took a deep breath and vanished from the graveyard with an inward twist.
Apparating to a spot across the countryside, George reappeared belly out, off again this time by foot even before he could smell the sea salt or hear the waves off the cove crash against rock and sand. His destination lay in the distance, a small conglomerate of shells and white-washed stone settled into the living landscape as if the ground were swallowing it whole.
Shell Cottage. The one place other than his brother's grave where George felt like he could still breathe.
As he made his approach, a small, warm light grew out of nowhere. The closer he got, the easier it was to identify the window over the kitchen sink. By the time George stepped off the main road and onto the lane he could see and smell the smoke puffing out of the shell and sandstone chimney. The signs of life were reassuring, given his previous location, and George hastened his final steps past the picket fence, across the garden path and up to the crooked front door.
He tapped his knuckles against the peeling paint and waited.
