Ron was tired, in fact he was almost too tired to fall asleep, and he really was too hot to sleep anyway. He stared out the window at the full moon and listened to Harry soft snoring. He was looking forward to seeing Hermione tomorrow and he was glad that Verity and Neville accepted his invitation to dinner. Mum seemed pleased to have a few extra mouths to feed and despite Verity's hesitation in accepting the invitation he thought she was pleased with it.
Ron had closed the shop up around nine that night, almost forcing the last few customers out the door, and he had seen the light burning under George's workroom door. He thought about knocking and had even gone as far as raising his hand but he reckoned George was busy and Ron wasn't sure he should be disturbed. In fact, Ron was a bit afraid to disturb him. He simply gathered the box of clothing his Mum had sent with him to take to Teddy Lupin and left George a note on the counter.
He'd walked along the streets of Diagon Alley and felt safe for the first time since the beginning of fourth year. Even in fifth year when he'd come in to town to buy Hermione's gift without Harry he didn't feel safe. Honestly back then how could you be safe as Harry Potter's best mate.
Ron had found the Apparation point near Gringott's and Apparated to Sheffield. He'd quickly felt around his body to make sure he hadn't splinched himself. He would never admit that he was aways slightly afraid he'd leave a bit of something important behind.
Ron watched Harry has he shifted in his sleep and before going back to his musings. He wiped a bit of sweat from his forehead and blew air on his damp fringe.
Mrs. Tonks had been grateful for the clothing and brought him into the house for a glass of Pumpkin Juice. Teddy had started crying and Ron was totally surprised when she placed the baby in his arms and rushed off to the kitchen to grab a bottle. It was odd holding such a smile child and he'd never admit it to anyone there was just something in the way that Teddy smiled that made his heart ache. Ron thought he could see a bit of Remus in Teddy but when the baby had changed his hair orange--he'd been reminded of Tonks. Ron stood in Mrs. Tonks' living room, quietly talking to the baby, and when Mrs. Tonks came back she even let him give Teddy his bottle. The little bloke at almost as well as Ron did!
Ron pulled apart the curtains in his room and moved to expand the small bench he was sitting on by the window. He watched the fire flies dance through the haze around the pond. The was a small sliver of moonlight glinting off the pond and he vaguely wondered if he could sneak Hermione down there for a bit tomorrow night.
The thought of Hermione made Ron smile slight and even though he was afraid of her reaction to his considering not going back to school he also knew she would support him. It was funny that looking back over the years that things were so much clearer to him.
Neville had
come into the shop tonight and brought up several interesting tidbits of news. Ron wasn't sure what he was going to do yet about school. He was going to talk to his brother's tomorrow night and see what they thought.
Hell, he'd told Neville he was considering not taking his NEWTS but he'd barely gotten to see Harry and hadn't discussed it with him.
Ron had quite a few thoughts about being an Auror but truthfully it was the character test that scared him the most. Ron knew he was insecure and as he fanned himself with a comic book as he remembered all his fears pouring out of that locket. He couldn't say the fears were completely gone but now he was certain of his Mother's love for him and truthfully he wasn't really worried about Harry and Hermione falling for each other. He had other fears of course, who didn't. Sometimes the weight of them seemed to crash down around, Ron. Ron wasn't sure who he could talk to about it either--big emotional messes made most people uncomfortable. Really, who was he to complain about what Hermione called about survivor's guilt to someone like Harry who'd been through so much and lost so much.
Ron sighed heavily and stood up slowly. He thought that maybe he could sleep now and mused again about how nice it would be to have a flat of his own. He might be able to get use one of those Daydream Charms if he did.
