Wow, I had no idea so many of you were interested in cleaning recipes!

All of these recipes are from Better Basics for the Home, which I absolutely cannot recommend highly enough. It’s packed with over 800 recipes, it’s not preachy, and each section gives a store-bought, natural alternative for each product. She admits freely that she doesn’t ( Read more... )

Yay, thank you! Um, but, she asks demandingly, could you maybe edit to add the cut tag text as a header above each section? I want to memory it, but the cut tags don't display on the post itself once you click on them, and I won't easily be able to go back to find the post in your LJ or my flist when I'm looking at it later (and I will!). I'm so trying all of this.

Well, wood, but I figured that one out, and the toilets one said toilets in it, so no problem, but when I got to the end, to the deodorizing spray, I had to back up, because at that point I'd forgotten what that one was for. *g* But now I know, so!

(psst, hope today is better! sisabet told me today that she always feels a certain sense of not being alone when she reads your work-related posts...)

What's washing soda?

I use Murphy's oil for many, many chores.

It's chemically similar to baking soda, but it's even more alkaline. Something to do with the processing, I think? Mine is made by Arm & Hammer, so it must be pretty common. It's used to boost laundry performance.

Vinegar is great for cleaning the dishwasher, too.

I second the question: what is washing soda?

Thanks so much for the recipes!

Ah, thanks. I thought it might be slang for club soda or something :)

Specific things: do you know of anything to get rid of oil stains? My favourite top fell onto an oil can and I've been trying for weeks to get the stain out. Also, anything for butter stains because I somehow managed to squish a butter pat all over my bag (don't ask).

I swear by using a little bicarb of soda mixed with water for my general cleaner. It's amazing at getting rid of really bad caffeine stains from inside cups, too. I used to scrub and scrub and scrub and eventually ditch the cups in my 'not to be used in company' cupboard, but one gentle wipe with bicarb and they're swishy-new! :D

The book suggests washing soda or glycerin. What kind of fabric is it?
