i don't care for your fairytales

i was kind of scratching my head when trying to tag the "au" because... lol, it's set in the same ~verse~ as a few of my other fics and drabbles (my last taeyeon/jonghyun, ara/e-young, dongwoo/yoona and this one sunny/tiffany drabble i did awhile ago) but neither of them are attending college in the drabble (drabble thing, whatever, i know it's technically longer than a drabble's supposed to be - mini-one shot, idk what to call it) but whatever. same universe, same difference. it's basically where jessica's the manager of a band made up of jonghyun (shinee), jonghyun (cnblue) and jonghun (ft island) and jinki's a bartender at the club they frequent the most/shinee!jonghyun's best friend and that's all the information you need. i'm sorry for rambling at all. hopefully you enjoy!

Jessica Jung didn't need a fairytale ending, with songbirds and a hand to lead her into some socially perceived ideal of happiness. Five year old Jessica Jung may have said differently - hands hiking up the hem of her birthday dress, yelling at the neighbor boy as he led her on a chase through the soft dirt of her backyard for stealing her tiara.
That was then though - this was now.  This was twenty years, a business degree and dozens of prettier dresses later. She didn't need someone to call her "prince" charming, someone to save her, someone to save her from distress. Anything they could do, she could most definitely do better. No one could tell her otherwise.

No one could have convinced her that someone out there could have needed her help as much as she didn't need theirs though.

It'd taken her a few instances to realize this. The worn down sole's of shoes not built for a job that dealt with dozens of splits drinks a day giving out under the body of someone a good half foot taller than her. The flushing of cheeks after the same person sent the entire contents of a box of drink mix down a flight of stairs - narrowly missing knocking her out in the process. It wasn't until the third time that she'd realized it couldn't be totally coincidental.

"This always happens when I'm around," she stated the obvious as she bent down to help pick up a few large shards of glass.

"Yeah, I guess you are." A small, but shaky, laugh met her eyes as she turned her head up to get a better look at the person in front of her.

He was cute when frazzled, she thought as she straightened herself up and made way toward a nearby trashcan, discarding of the glass. "What's your name? I see you around here all the time, but I've never caught it," she questioned as she leaned up against a nearby wall, gaze focused on him in curiosity as he continued to deal with his mess.

"Lee Jinki," he replied with a weak smile as he moved forward to throw away the rest of the glass. "You're Jessica, right?" Jessica straightened herself up at this - nodding her head firmly as a means of confirmation. "Jonghyun told me, I have been stalking you around or anything, don't worry."

"I didn't think that," Jessica started as she absentmindedly started to move toward the other side of the table, reaching for her purse that was draped over the back. "I caught on to you being friends with him awhile ago, I'm not really sure why we haven't talked before now," she paused as she slung the arm of the purse over her shoulder. "Or after all of those other… accidents."

She turned up to look at Jinki just in time to catch him turn to his side, narrowly missing the light crimson blush that had spread across his cheeks. That was cute too; he was cute. "Yeah, sorry about all of that, it just sometimes… happens."

Jessica gave out a small laugh as she started to step further and further away from Jinki - her hand raising upward to dismiss his apology. "You don't have to apologize, it happens to the best of us," and she smiled as she closed in toward the exit of the building, her wave of dismissal turning into one of goodbye. "I'll be seeing you around then, Lee Jinki."

And she did see him around. A third time turned into a fourth (this time a pizza cutter taking on a life of it's own, narrowly missing the head of the guitarist of the band she managed), and a fifth (a beer nut accident). The sixth she had constituted as possibly more potential as Jinki lost traction in front of the club, falling backward into her arms.

It was like a scene from one of those dramas Min Young unnie always made her watch, but more ridiculous because it wasn't fiction. It was reality, it was actually happening and she couldn't help but laugh at it.

She laughed at a lot of things about him. The way he spoke - he was so much more clever than some other people she knew. The way he smiled - bright, but somewhat lopsidedly when he laughed. His laugh, wow, that was her favorite thing about him. He laughed like every little thing she said to him, every weak joke she told him could take the cake as the funniest thing he'd ever heard.

He'd asked her out after having a few too many drinks - liquid courage, she guessed - and though her friends had called their plans for dinner and a movie "simple but fun", Jessica disagreed. Maybe it was typical of them, but everything he'd said to her that night had made her see how extraordinary he really was.

She'd told him that he made her happy, effortlessly, after their six month anniversary. Jinki had smiled and agreed wholeheartedly.

He'd told her that he was in love with her three months later. Jessica couldn't have agreed more.

Their love wasn't clumsy like Jinki tended to be. It was solid, strong and Jessica knew would last by how effortlessly they'd been able to admit it to each other. She could lean on him and he could lean on her - even if he may have needed a little extra help balancing from time to time. She'd gladly lend a hand if needed.
